Drama, blah
Jan. 22nd, 2006 12:39 amOkay, more
feminist-related drama on my friends list, most of which isn't worth addressing. But the best part of it is that I just finished an exchange in some twit's journal, in which she variously accused me of:
-being interested in feminism and critical race theory only because I attended an anti-racism meeting at my college, held hands and sang kumbayas
After I debunked THAT one, it became:
-only having learned anything about racism and feminism on the internets
-"smelling" like a male [she looked, but she didn't look too hard, obviously]
-being in her journal to explain sociology to her [discussion of sociology didn't even COME UP]
Then she proceeded to:
-slam my school because she hadn't heard of it, and was confused as to how I could be taking the program I am where I am
-announce that she was anti-porn [like I said, she looked, right? and totally missed what I was complaining about...]
-announce that she believes ADHD is overdiagnosed and generally used as an excuse [because knowing what you're talking about before you open your mouth is for PLEBES!]
Oh, and my "sore spot" is my school, because that was the last thing I responded to her about. Not her classism, no - I'm just SO HURT that she doesn't have a fucking clue where I go to school. Yeah, I have SO many qualms about attending an institution with my school's track record; I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel!
If anyone doubts the true focus of her comments, some samples! She has said the following, verbatim (not all to me):
You're a fucking racist wannabe person of color and you are 26 and still in college at one of the worst universities in California.
And...
As a disabled person who has had some trouble getting through school, at 26, to still be in college is embarrassing if you're not also disabled.
And...
And I believe that ADHD is an overdiagnosed mental illness and that most people with "ADHD" are just using that as an excuse for their poor grades and their inability to get into any better of a school than a technical college. [THAT was to me.]
That's just the parts that were funniest to me (since, you know, most of the above was a direct back-and-forth between us), but this actually spans several hundred comments in various places. And in every place she commented, it was ALL LIKE THAT.
Yeah, REAL winner.
I seriously can't believe this crazy hasn't been banned from
feminist yet.
Need to eat.

Date: 2006-01-22 10:31 am (UTC)Bipolar? Try Borderline personality disorder. Seriously. Maybe Aspergers. I'm not being mocking here. There is seriously something WRONG.
Also, some serious, interesting discussion is to be had about mental illness as "disability" and it's relation to white women using it as an "I'm oppressed" trump card at some point...but she's not the person to do it with. I say this as a person with mental health issues that I care not to go throwing around as some sort of excuse for my behavior (or a goddamn sympathy plea) but as a serious yet somewhat treatable issue.

Date: 2006-01-22 04:00 pm (UTC)I honestly cannot figure that one out. "I hate all you twenty-something white women who take sociology courses and think you know everything! You don't know a damn thing!
"...By the way, it's pathetic you're still in college. I'm only 21, and I might be going to MILLS!"
Um, okay? WTF?
Bipolar? Try Borderline personality disorder. Seriously. Maybe Aspergers. I'm not being mocking here. There is seriously something WRONG.
Hmmm. I can believe bipolar being the main issue, actually.
I wouldn't say Asperger's. Having a few spectrum people on my list, and having followed
It's also not something the one borderline person I know would do, but that's a really limited sample. Her style of constant attack just seems at odds with the push-pull thing borderline people do, though.
But she's obviously convinced that she can never be wrong, regardless of what she says. She can criticize other white women who are in almost the exact same situation she is because she is SO much better than anyone else. That reads kind of manic to me, you know?
Heh. Not that I'm a doctor. *amused*

Yeah...mental illness has always been stigmatized. But it weirds me out that the topic just conveniently came up in a peripheral discussion of a racism debate.
LOL...
Date: 2006-01-22 09:29 pm (UTC)Now, most of them do end up demonstrating that, so I do have a prejudice against them, as a whole. But it's fairly slight. And I'd never claim that someone could not be correct about such-and-such a theory or fact JUST because she was a young white college student. I mean, REALLY.
Oh, LAWD!
Date: 2006-01-22 09:24 pm (UTC)I'm going to say both.

I so agree. Remember that post she made about "how are you privileged, and how not?" SO many white women saying they were disabled. VERY few POC of any kind.
I'm not saying it's not a non-privileged position, but then there's a whole issue I've been trying to get into (actually in that post of Chree's) about what "privilege" should mean. I think it has to be unfairly and artificially granted to specifically advantage someone to the disadvantage of others. Otherwise, it's not a privilege the way white or het or male privilege is... It's just an "advantage" or something.
This is why Peggy McIntosh's list is so problematic. Because you can make a list like that for anyone-- even women! But that doesn't mean there's "female privilege."
IOW... With whiteness, it's almost all privilege, and no natural advantage. Unless you count being better able to convert Vitamin D, but that also applies to lighter-skinned people of other races.
With sex, it's mostly privilege for males and some natural advantages for all sexes.
With disability, it's a bit more even. It's not a "privilege" akin to white privilege that I can walk without assistance. It IS a privilege that, say, I can access certain things because of it, especially if those things are inaccessible to wheelchairs, etc. for no good reason.
You know?
