Hey, [livejournal.com profile] griffen!

Remember when you posted that link to an argument against Harry Potter? A couple of days ago?

What a coincidence, I found an answer.

Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] jumbodaifuku, that ass has officially been kicked.

Oi, Harry Potter arguments?

Why fight over a fictional character?

*shakes head*

Why WRITE fictional characters, then? What's the point, if they are so meaningless that their actions don't matter to you? *stare*

I can see an author arguing about the nature of his or her character, I do it all the time. But, someone who didn't create the character, arguing about them...it seems weird to me. The actions would matter to me, within my own stories however, not someone elses.

Once it's been published, those characters do NOT belong to the author anymore. Just the revenue.

It happens because once the book is in a public space, those characters belong to the collective consciousness, to at least some degree. That's what publishing does. That's what the AUTHOR agrees to do, and if they don't like it...they can very well not write.

The best writers understand that once your character is out of your head, it's not yours anymore.

Seems perfectly all right to me. You can't keep control of something that is going to exist mainly in the imagination of the public, and I say that as a writer, not a fan.

Thanks for the direction. The article rather annoyed me, too (but don't tell [livejournal.com profile] mhw, he'd have my head. *grins*).

Heh heh. No problem. I was very pleased to find it myself. Nice to know there are those out there who have less of a life then I do, and can do these things for me. [/wry]
