Dear flist,
MY HAIR IS TURNING BLONDE.
Repeat,
IMAGE CRISIS!MY HAIR IS TURNING BLONDE!!1!1eleventy!
...And I have NO idea why. None.
My hair is naturally about the color 6 on
this chart, I believe. It's hard to tell, but it's a fairly dark brown with warmish undertones...in the summer I used to get hints of dark auburn in it if I stayed out in the sun - but not even so much that you could really call it "highlights."
Right NOW, I've got increasing streaks of about 12 or so, and even chunks of 14-ish at the temples. I may be off a shade or so in either direction, but let's just say that this is REALLY starting to be noticeable. I first noticed this while glancing into my mall's basement washroom mirror, and I thought it was just flattering light giving my hair a pretty glow (they're new washrooms, very slick), but people have started coming up to me and blurting, "OMG YOU HAVE BLONDE IN YOUR HAIR, ARE YOU COLORING IT?!"
Now, my family does have hair that tends to run through all the available shades in the first few years of our life. When I was born, my hair was black, and it then (according to various relatives and some photographic evidence) ran through light brown, red, strawberry blonde, ash blonde, and finally deepened and settled on the darker brown I have now.
However, after toddlerhood or so, nobody's hair changes color except to grey! Right?
And yes, I know, the sun and various chemicals can bleach your hair. But a) I avoid the sun as much as possible because I hate it, and b) I've been putting the very same hair gel in my hair for a good year now. This color change seems newish (over the past few months, maybe?) AND is accelerating.
My mother and I discussed this the other night, and she suggested that perhaps the hair gel I'm using has changed its formula unannounced, and it's bleaching my hair. I was ready to accept that, and made a mental note to pick up another brand.
Then today I was messing with my hair, and suddenly realized:
Where I'm seeing reddish/blonde streaks, the ROOTS are blonde. The tips are not.
Now, wait, I thought,
I do apply hair gel in the front from the roots up...And while I was leaning in mulling this over, I suddenly noticed there's a large streak of reddish blonde IN MY LEFT EYEBROW.
I don't put hair gel IN MY EYEBROW.
And I'm just...freaking the fuck out right now. I'm not overly vain about my appearance because I don't have much to be vain ABOUT, but I will say that I have always loved my hair. True, it's a bit Harry Potter wild (and god knows how many times I've heard THAT comparison), but it's thick enough, and a rich enough color, and my eyebrows are dark and have a nice shape, and my eyelashes (not blonde yet, but if the trend continues...) are black and longish, and YES the females in my family are CRAZY JEALOUS, HAH! (My mother once commented to a hair stylist, "It's so unfair, isn't it? Why is it that the BOYS are the ones who get the thick hair and the long pretty lashes?")
I know it's just hair. It's just dead cells.
It's just that my hair is one of the few physical features about myself that I'd never want to change, and it's changing!
It's probably caused by something minor. Something I could change. But seriously, what?!
My
haaaair! *mourns*
