"Humpty-Dumpty logic" indeed
Feb. 27th, 2004 11:54 pmOrson Scott Card, acting more like an asshat than any intelligent man should have a right to.
Gays can marry! They can marry a member of the opposite sex any old time they feel like it! Despite the fact that this is one of the most tired arguments anyone ever uses against gay marriage, Card manages to sound like he thinks he's presenting a ground-breaking idea. He continues with an attack on anything that doesn't fit his perfect little society of people who live only in nuclear families, and it just gets worse from there. Witness the degeneration into a rant about how kids are seduced into thar eval homosexual lifestyle! Allowing people to think it's okay to be gay might, god forbid, encourage kids who aren't sure of their sexuality to explore the possibilities. Damn, they're "damaged goods" now! Eval leftist television will promote homosexuality above heterosexuality!
And straight people need not feel left out. Were you aware, for example, that you are a walking life-support system for your reproductive organs? That's right, you have no better use than popping out babies. That's what society is built on, and how dare you suggest anything might work better?
*sighs*
I remember the subject of Card's possible views of homosexuality coming up once in a conversation with
danielray. I seem to recall him saying that some of the "undercurrents" in some of Card's books seemed questionable; I thought that was possible. I decided then that even if Card turned out to be as massively homophobic as he has turned out to be, I would not let it stop me from enjoying the Ender's Game series; nevertheless, I am deeply disappointed in the man, and I'm not certain I can entirely keep my promise to myself. I know that whenever I pick up my copy of one of his books now, I will remember this, and it will sour the reading experience.
I'm sure he's lost many fans over this, and it didn't have to be this way. Shame, Card, shame.
In other news, I bought the Queer Eye soundtrack, solely for the Widelife song ("All Things") and I'm not sorry. The whole album's fantastic.
We keep getting power surges, so I'm shutting things down now. I'd rather not fry the computer.

Date: 2004-04-08 08:23 pm (UTC)I've loved Orson Scott Card since I read "Ender's Game" several years back and have since read most his other books. After reading that article, he pisses me off. Fucking Mormon...
You're right, I don't think I'll be able to think of him the same way. Argh...
