Do you ever stop and look down on a highway and contemplate the significance of all those cars? Does it ever stun you to realize that every single one of those cars is emitting pollutants, and does so every day?
Do you ever wonder if our sky will always be blue from down here on the ground?

Date: 2004-01-02 02:14 am (UTC)The reason they're not efficient is that it takes more energy to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen then you can get from the resulting hydrogen, even in the most advanced fuel cells to date.
It might, in fact, be true that some auto maker bought some plans for a hydrogen powered car some time ago, like in the 60's, but such a thing would have been even further behind the techno-curve than today's modern designs.
The only feasible option is to have hydrogen plants, with tankers hauling loads of hydrogen to stations, like they do with gas. The problem with that is, like electric cars, you still have to use *more* energy to get the hydrogen than you get out of it, so you have to generate *more* pollution than you would have if you had built the car with a highly efficient gasoline engine. In other words, it would be much more cost effective to go with a hybrid design, or else just a much more fuel efficient design than most auto makers care to strive for.
Then, there is the problem of storing and transporting raw hydrogen. It's so reactive chemically, that what you'd end up with are a bunch of rolling hydrogen bombs, waiting for an accident.
And they thought the Pinto was bad.
hehe j/k. I'm sure they've already solved that little problem. I'm just sore because I had a pinto and everyone laughed at it even though I loved it.
