Letters from yours truly - Gaia rants
Jul. 27th, 2003 03:35 amUnsent letters. Too many recipients.
Dear Idiots,
Go on, say it is "selfish" to be suicidal. Go ahead. Don't even make the slightest effort to help someone, even if that "help" comes in the form of simply not telling them to DO IT.
You're being selfish, though.

Dear Idiots,
Astrology IS CRAP. It has no scientific basis whatsoever and if you studied a little astronomy, you would KNOW THAT.
If you HONESTLY think that because you were born on a certain day in August, you are a "Leo" and this is what makes you as arrogant as you obviously are, you're wrong. I provide links from astronomy sites, and all you can give me is, "I am TOO a Scorpio! Hmmph!" Is that all you got? I want at LEAST one stupid link in return!
It doesn't matter what way you slice up the damn sky, astrology is supposedly about the movements of heavenly bodies, and I got news for you kids - the planets and the Sun don't move the way you want them to.
Sorry. You'll just have to wait around another 2600 years for it to work again.
-Bean
P.S. And there are no "traits" for Ophiuchus. Can I get "missing the point" for $500, Alex?
-------------
DearIdiots People That Confuse Me,
You prefer "false hope" over "no hope because I know we're screwed"?
When asked point-blank that question, with EXACTLY that wording - this isn't an atheist/theist thing. Just being asked, "false vs no," you say false?
Um, why?

Dear World,
Help.

Date: 2003-07-27 02:53 am (UTC)And actually, I'm doing my astronomy paper on astrology and the correspondence it has to the science. Astrology has a lot of "tie in's" in astronomy.
Except, none of that really applies to your argument. It seems that you're dealing with blatently stupid people that don't realize that astrology should be served with a few grains of salt.

Date: 2003-07-27 01:59 pm (UTC)Astrology made more sense back when all the planets and shtuff actually moved the way people claim they do. But they're currently a few weeks off. So. *shrug*
But when you said it can offer insight... *thinks* I'm thinking that astronomy does have some good ideas behind it. "Balance" is the first word that comes to my mind.
When you're done with the paper, though, I wonder if I could see it? I'm curious now.
Yeah.
Date: 2003-07-27 02:01 pm (UTC)I'll email you the paper when it's finish. snowpaw84 @hotmail.com, right?
Re: Yeah.
Date: 2003-07-27 02:10 pm (UTC)Alright.

Date: 2003-07-27 03:01 am (UTC)I think there isn't enough information there... probably because it came from some gawdawfully long thread full of idiots, as ye said.
no, I don't know why I keep mispelling things on purpose.
But... "I know we're screwed," sounds like someone is presuming something?? As in, "we're screwed because the Chinese and the North Koreans are going to get together, and then parts of the former Soviet Union are going to join with them in an effort to have some power against the new European Union, and then, Bush will open his stupid trap, and we're all going to die?"
I mean... as purely plausible as that is, I still don't see how I can say that it is "false hope" to believe that someone will eventually get that half-brained corporate finger puppet out of the White House, one way or another.
Um...
but that's probably not what you were talking about, there.
I'm guessing.

Date: 2003-07-27 02:09 pm (UTC)I guess I lied. It is an atheist/theist thing. I mean, basically, the question was - your choices are ONLY false hope (in heaven or an afterlife, I guess. Or it's no hope. (You know for a fact your life is all you have.)
I suppose you could come up with something else - like, say, a meteorite was going to hit the earth. You could have false hope something would save you, or you could face facts and admit life on earth was over.
*shrug*
Either way, I do NOT understand the "false hope" people. I can't comprehend it at all.

We can only hope. :P
*Cancerian hugs*
*simmering glower* Not funny. *sulks*

Date: 2003-07-28 03:14 am (UTC)hmm..
I think that the question is a tiny bit prejudicial... because "no hope" is a rather bleak way of defining true Darwinian existance.
I rather think that acknowledging that what we have is here and now can be a rather empowering act... rather than relying on some spatial or spiritual "judgement" system to allay all of the ills we encounter in our life.
and... eh..
hehe...
that was just a leel joke a the end there.
kind of a touchy spot, there, eh?
;)
*non astrological (secular?) hugses*
oh...
and on a side note...
isn't it just a teensy bit ironic how "non-secular" is just that close in sound to "non sequitur?"
;))))))))))

Date: 2003-07-27 04:44 am (UTC)Actually, I saw a well known psychologist on TV not too long ago mention that there is proof that astrology isn't crap, apparently it's been proven that astrology can map people's moods and such. I was personally a bit surprised, I too thought it was rubbish. Which isn't to say that I now believe it's gospel, because I don't, but if someone with credentials is willing to back it up then I'm not willing to dismiss it.
Oh and for future reference I prefer false hope. Denial is my lot in life, or so I'm told.

Date: 2003-07-27 01:49 pm (UTC)A shrink on TV versus practically every astronomy site, book, etc. out there? *sigh* What does this psychologist know of astronomy? They are qualified to tell you your personality falls into a certain grouping. They are NOT qualified to tell you how the sky works.
Look, astronomy may have some influence on people's personalities. I wouldn't be surprised. (Although there have been studies that claimed they found the exact opposite, so one guy's word doesn't mean much. You have to balance that.)
But if it does, it's undoubtedly because people want it to work. If you tell yourself that because you're X sign you will have Y and Z traits, boy - you might have those traits, at least a bit. Or at least you'll believe you do.
There were people who replied to my Gaia thread on this topic to say, that - hey, I'm really a Cancer? (wait for it) THAT FITS! One minute ago, they thought they were a Leo, and THAT fit! Gee, I wonder how that works.
But whatever way you slice it, you are not influenced by the heavenly bodies the way the astrologer in the newspaper tells you. It's a sham. Astrology is based on movements of the Sun and the planets from thousands of years ago. Our sky has changed. We have a different North Star, the planetary movements have shifted by a few weeks.
If astrology works, it is only as personality groupings.

Date: 2003-07-27 01:53 pm (UTC)I don't want to get in a big fight, I really don't. But going on the word of one psychologist on TV - that REALLY bothers me.

Date: 2003-07-27 01:55 pm (UTC)As I told Griff in a follow-up comment, I was extremely irritated when I wrote this. Which is why it has this tone.
I said:

Date: 2003-07-27 07:47 pm (UTC)Which is what I said, isn't it? Geez Dan, I think I might go somewhere and cry now! Explode much?
(no subject)
Date: 2003-07-27 11:08 pm (UTC)Explode? I got irritated, I didn't explode at anyone. I'm sorry if you felt I went off on you; that wasn't what I intended to convey to you. My bad.
And no...that wasn't what came across. Not to me, anyway, and I'd guess not to Griff, since he agreed. Then again, I can't speak for what Griff thinks, but he's been a big proponent of astrology in the past, and I assumed he believes it works the way people say it does. I could be wrong about that.
I suppose I was maybe less fair to your comment than I might have been because he agreed to it. Anyway, I'm sorry Ben.

Date: 2003-07-27 02:19 pm (UTC)Astrology is cool and fun, I think, as long as you don't take it too seriously.
