"Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can..."
So I went to see Spider-Man with Nicole Friday night. Reviewers bite - 'cuz this movie rawks, so there.
I think Tobey Maguire did a great job, Kirsten Dunst was hot, as usual. I like action that is satisfying without wearing you down. When I go to see a movie where there are no Heros and Villians, by the end of the movie I often feel exhausted - two hours of cliffhangers does that to me. At least in this movie, you know Spider-Man is going to win. (Otherwise there would be no money-making sequels.) I think the action was well sequenced and shot.
I'll admit the movie starts to lose a bit of steam by the second half, but the first half is charming, as Peter Parker gradually becomes aware of his new powers while agonizing over the girl. I particularly like the part where Peter gets a fork stuck to his wrist, but I'll save that for those who haven't seen it yet.
I think it was Ray who criticized that the movie replaces Spider-Man's witticisms with "a 1950's earnestness", which is true enough in interior monologue, but there are hints of the wise-cracker Spider-Man will become. The Green Goblin and Spider-Man are having a showdown when a newspaper editor attempts to interrupt. Spider-Man shoots his mouth with webbing and quips, "Hey kiddo, let mom and dad talk for a minute, will ya?" I expect in the sequels, as Spider-Man becomes older and more cynical, there will be more of these one-liners. (Hey, I can make ANYTHING in a movie fit the circumstances I want!)
*******
There is a girl in my school that practically no one likes. Her name is Cathleen, and according to rumor, she's screwed a number of people over. Now it has come out that Cathleen was not a virgin when she came to our school, despite claims to the contrary. So some other girls I know, Trish and Crystal and maybe others, are taking this opportunity to attack her.
This really disgusts me, especially the way Trish and Crystal gloated when they heard the news. It it none of their business if Cathleen has had sex or not. I don't care if she's hurt them - hasn't anyone ever heard of turning the other cheek?
