Ever eaten up most of a free afternoon watching a debate thread? Well, I have.

And this one pisses me off.

It's all about whether HP slash is pedophilia, whether it's "sick," and (a larger issue) whether it's okay to write and/or enjoy stories about children having sex.

Personally, I would never want someone judging my FANTASIES, thank you very much, and some sugar on top.

I am entirely against the sexual abuse of children (why wouldn't I be??) and I'm against child porn. But, in my OH-so-humble opinion (silence!), HP slash is just not child porn. Not any kind that is harmful, anyway. I think this guy should shut his self-righteous mouth.

...Now this doesn't have a LOT of relevance (no screaming throng, exactly, just underdogs, I guess), but for some reason, this makes me think of a question someone asked in a book I read:

"When you picture the Salem witch trials...and you see a witch being led to the gallows...who do you identify with, the prosecuted 'witch,' or the screaming throng?"

Me, I'm the witch.

How about you?

Well, gee, doesn't everyone identify with the witch? Who's going to pick the screaming throng? ;>

you are now to blame for veering me off into a long distraction at work, ending up amidst some bad HP slash...

except for the obvious lameness of slash, especially harry potter, (except for star trek slash, of course, cause i'm cool like that), i don't see anything wrong with it.

It's kinda in the same vien of music that talks about killing... should we punish people for TALKING about doing something? I think that takes it a little too far. When they actually *do* something, that's when action needs to be taken.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't found an HP slash community yet, and now I have, thanks to you! :) Heh.

Followed the link to your journal, from that debate community. I wanted to thank you for your arguments. I TRIED to defend my point of view, but I'm unfortunately not as good in English (or in argumenting anyway :) as I'd like.

I know this is old. I know this will prolly not get answered, but seeing that I'm the one whose Comm started the whole mess on [livejournal.com profile] debate, I figured I'd throw my two cents in, late.

[livejournal.com profile] thies was basically trolling for a debate. I really don't think he had a point, he just happened to be watching the Community Promo boards at the very moment I put up an ad for my new Community, [livejournal.com profile] pottersandwich. Potter Sandwich isn't really centered on slash, it's centered on the threesome between the three leads in Harry Potter (Hermione, Harry, Ron). Some dumb broad commented how it was sick to fantasize about children, then [livejournal.com profile] thies popped in and it kinda snowballed from there.

I created the Comm because I wanted to see more creativity devoted to the idea of Hermione and Ron both wanting Harry, rather than being straight-on Harry/Ron slash, or slash in general. It's more of a polyamorous/pansexual idea, rather than one-on-one homo or heterosexuality. And right now it's been more explorative of the emotional aspect between them, rather than the sexual aspect. Heh, I DO want to see some PWP, though.

That's all I wanted to say. *s*

Ah, I couldn't have said whether the community was centered on slash or not - I didn't go to look. I think, really, the point is moot because it would have been the same argument either way - whether HP slash is fantasizing about children, whether that's okay, etc. Whether your community is a slash comm or not - HP slash does exist, and so the argument exists. Although I understand the frustration of having something you've created be misrepresented.

And [livejournal.com profile] thies is usually nothing but a troll. Most of the trolls/troll threads in [livejournal.com profile] debate just amuse me, but this one pissed me off mainly because of his whole attitude. ("I'm right, you're wrong, and I'm going to IGNORE everything you say.") That just doesn't do anything for debate. Most people at least ATTEMPT to address counter arguments. What DID amuse me was when other members of debate who aren't in the HP communities also got pissed at him.
