[DW] Ep. 4x01 - "Partners in Crime"
Apr. 6th, 2008 11:04 amUgh, I didn't sleep at ALL last night. Not a bit. I might as well have stayed up and read Doctor Who forums or something. My eyes feel about as gritty as if I did.
Anyway, the episode! SPOILERS AHOY!
-WHO IS BACK! Let's get that most important bit out of the way.
-DONNA NOBLE IS BACK! This is totally what I've been waiting for! A companion that makes me laugh, that flummoxes the Doctor, that I think is totally awesomepants. WIN.
-Gramps is awesome, it cannot be said enough.
-Holy crap, Donna's reinvented herself as...Sarah Jane Smith.
-As I've said, I love when Who gets slapstick, because it's a program that I think can do it very well. Donna and the Doctor constantly missing each other in the beginning was just the best. Unlike some, I don't think it dragged on for too long. HEY, I watch Family Guy, which is the king program of dragging jokes out until they're not funny anymore. (In theory, but actually...they're still funny.)
-Poor Doctor all alone in the TARDIS. Yes, I let that moment jerk me around.
-Okay, the Adipose creatures? Kinda cute, but really...not THAT cute. Really. People, THEY'RE MADE OF FAT. Ick, ick, ick. ALSO, this is why diet pills are bad - consider this your PSA.
-Is anyone else wondering why Journalist Penny didn't say anything about Donna's presence in the washroom at any point when she was captured? Unless she had headphones in, she surely heard Donna's cellphone conversation. She seemed a bit willing to try anything to get her story, so I wouldn't have put it past her.
-Donna and the Doctor's silent conversation was, as everyone has said, complete win. ("...Donna?!" "It's me!" "I can see that!" "This is [fantastic, brilliant, wonderful, great, molto bene, very very good, whatever]!") You just KNEW the moment the Doctor put his stethoscope on the window that they were going to get caught like that.
-"You even wore the same suit! ...Don't you ever change?" HA!
-Donna not believing the Titanic was real, but chasing after crop circles. SO DONNA. I notice the Doctor didn't say anything to that, so maybe he's resigned himself to Donna's innate cluelessness.
-LOVED Donna snapping at the Doc while hanging from the cable. Feisty as always.
-The Doctor's completely graceless fall through the window was also hilarious win.
-Lots of running! I love David Tennant running around in those suits. He sorta manages to make it look like suits are good running gear. Oh, and his hair was excellent this episode.
-"You look older." "Thanks." I like Donna's face here, but I'm not totally sure how to read that exchange. Does the Doc really take that as a compliment? Also, the bits about Martha and Rose...especially the comment about ruining Martha's life. Bit harsh on himself.
-Loved Donna cutting through the Doctor's freak-out to hand him the second capsule. And all the doubters who thought Donna wouldn't be a good companion can just STFU now.
-Gramps missing the ship flying behind him? IS IT GENETIC?
-MARTHA changed the Doctor? I'm curious as to how it was Martha's influence that led to the Doctor being willing to spare the cute, harmless fat babies their lives. I don't buy this line.
-Galactic Supernanny landing with a messy splat? SO GROSS RTD, JESUS.
-Donna dragging the Doctor off was great, but I was cringing in anticipation of the moment when she realized the Doctor wasn't all gung-ho about her coming along. I hate it when people are embarrassed.
-"You have...a hatbox." I loled.
-The whole awkward conversation outside the TARDIS. Now, Ten said, "[Martha] fancied me," in that awkwardly prideful way...I wasn't sure how to read that at first, but now I think he was actually trying to IMPRESS Donna. Note that this was right after she says that Martha was good for him. I DON'T think he's proud, per se, that Martha was hopelessly in love with him, and his guilty speech about it to Donna proves it.
And it's great they had that conversation (which the Doc hasn't had with previous companions), and Donna's "skinny streak of alien nothing," was hilarious, as everyone's noted.
I still keep coming back to the fact that I'm now SURE the Doctor wants to impress her on some level. Not that he doesn't try to impress all of his companions (show them the universe and all that jazz), but that was so little-boy-ish.
Catherine Tate has said she's a "big sister" to the Doctor, and I can see that dynamic fitting. I can also see the Doctor having a weird pseudo-thing for her that he never totally acknowledges.Because she's not young and blonde. I really almost want that to be the case, because it would mean that TPTB dared to have the Doctor flirt with someone who isn't pretty and itty-bitty. Somehow though, I don't think they'll go quite that far. Pity.
-Rose. Yeah. Sent chills down my spine, because I was NOT expecting to see her so soon. And the music...brr. So of course I started wondering if this is setting up the underlying arc, and if we'll see bits of Rose's world (if not Rose herself) fade in and out of the Doctor's world throughout the series. I agree with the speculation that says it's not clear if Rose is even fully "there" in the Doctor's world, as it seems like she's listening to someone else speak who isn't visible.
-Waving to Gramps. Cheesy, but awesome.
Okay, I think that's it. Gotta dash to work shortly!

Date: 2008-04-06 06:25 pm (UTC)I don't think he's taking it as a compliment. I think it's more like, yeah, thanks, I'd noticed that myself. Thinking back to the season 3 finale - I'd say he's still quite rattled from what happened, and then there was VotD with every-fucking-body dying on him, which probably didn't boost his self-confidence any. Now there he is, with the person who as the first one in a long line told him to go and have his adventures on his own, kthxbai, and he's probably thinking, yeah, she's the one person who actually realized that being in my company is not a good idea. And he doesn't want her to stop thinking that, because he's convinced that he'll hurt anyone who comes with him (which, let's face it, he eventually will), so he tells her exactly what happened to the last person who was with him.
That's also why I loved loved loved his reaction when Donna answered this with, hai, I changed my mind xD.
As to the Doctor wanting to impress her, I think you're right about this. I mean, usually all he has to do is wriggle his eyebrows and all the girls and most of the boys are sold. I think it's just an automatic reaction to Donna's obvious disinterest, because he's just not used to that. It's quite endearing ;).
I would love love love it if the Doctor fell for Donna. That would be hilarious awkward lulz. Because he'd be so five-year-oldish about it, and it would be a welcome spin on the usual. But I don't think they'll be going there, either.

An ego that size needs lots of feeding, yeah.
