Guess who worked 12 hours without a break yesterday? Yeah, happy fucking Valentine's Day, everyone.

Also, I'm not receiving comment notifications, for some reason. If you reply to me somewhere, and you want me to see it, comment here and let me know!

God, that sucks, in addition to being illegal. If they do that a lot, you might consider keeping a log? I only say that because someone at one of the hospitals affiliated with the one I work at filed a lawsuit over missed breaks and short or late lunches, and now everyone in all of the hospitals is awaiting an audit after which we'll receive reparation checks for the time they screwed us out of.

I mean, it may be a familyish business in some ways, in that relatives work there in higher up positions, but it's still a big chain with big profits and deep pockets.

Not that I like suing, or anything... but they shouldn't do that to you. It isn't right.

Ah, but this time, it wasn't my boss asking me to work crazy hours. (For once!) I mean, she HAS asked me to work illegal hours before, but she'd NEVER ask me to work 12 hours at a stretch. And even if she did, she'd never ask me to do it without a break.

Thing is, Boss Lady (BL) and Boss's Daughter are both at a Taco Time convention this week...which happens to be on a Mexican cruise ship. (Gee!) Out of the staff left in the store, I'M the most senior. There's another night supervisor, and then a woman my boss has been training for a few months to handle opening the store, ordering our supplies, doing the finances and stuff. (BL!surrogate, we think of her.)

One of our two kitchen guys mentioned to me mid-morning yesterday that his stomach was upset, and he wanted to go home. Which was impossible, since he was scheduled to close the store with me and one other guy, and you need three people. And we had NO STAFF to call in yesterday.

Long story short...he simply left at 3 p.m. In fact, BL!surrogate drove him home. Apparently as soon as the other night supervisor told him that he could leave ONLY if we found someone else to close the store (which was unlikely), he called his doctor and made an appointment. And then said he'd only come in anyway to help in the morning, now he was going to the doc's, BYE.

So at three, me and the other night super are simply left there alone, just the two of us. (On Valentine's Day! Good times.) One other guy was supposed to be in at 5, and then the other super was supposed to leave at 7...she stayed an extra hour to help out, but she HAD to leave at 8 because she had to go home and give her toddler this medication which has to be taken so many hours apart, etc.

So just me and this other guy...we closed all three positions. His mom picked him up around 10, and then I was there until midnight. I had a little boat of rice around 9ish, but there was never any possible way I could have gone for a break during the day with how busy it was.

The thing that really upsets me though, is not the lack of break or the length of the hours. (I'm on speed Dexedrine! I don't need food or sleep, wheeeee!) It's the ugly feeling I have that my boss will side with the kitchen guy and BL!surrogate. Because except for a couple of people, our core [day] staff is made up of people here on some sort of work contract from the Philippines. (I don't really understand it...they must be working toward citizenship here, I guess.) And they have REALLY strictly controlled schedules (I'm sure so they can't be taken advantage of), so I think BL will just tell me that there's nothing that could have been done.

And even THAT would not bother me, except that...they really don't care. I mean, they're excellent workers, but they don't care about the store itself. So they didn't care that there wasn't staff to close the store, they didn't care about those of us left being stuck without help, and they didn't care about the fact that I wouldn't get a break. (The other night super mentioned it to BL!surrogate, and she just shrugged.) They WERE pissed I was arguing about the kitchen guy leaving - I guess they thought he was sick enough that I was being totally unreasonable by not letting him go without argument.

It kills me that they think I was being a jerk demanding this guy stay his scheduled hours.

So I took a bunch of the hot chocolate mix they all share. I will extract compensation in the form of non-alcoholic beverages, HA!

wow, so BL!surrogate is on the same work contract? That does sound terrible, though it kind of explains why they don't care about the operation or the other employees. I've worked with Filipino people before (I don't really count, since I don't speak the language) and they do tend to be extremely cliqueish... as in they'll do anything they can to help one of their countrymen get what they want. It's an incredible network.

I'm not alone, either, in thinking this... they have a huge network in nursing, for some reason, and almost everyone I've worked with has mentioned this at one time or another.

It really sucks to work with coworkers who don't give a damn if you're screwed.

Well that explains...a LOT. Whoa. I wonder why that is...a cultural thing? Something to do with being surrounded by a white-dominant society? Some combination? Huh.

I mean, that's not all bad, because now all the Filipino people in the food court help us out (or help us MORE if they did before)...I'm sure my boss is saving a bundle on plumbing repair bills, since kitchen guy and another guy from New York Fries are our handymen.

And they're great, fun people to work with when stuff is going well with them...

But bah. It's frustrating that I might expect them to close ranks every time something goes wrong.

Although. Overheard kitchen guy's sister asking around today about my lack of break on Thursday (i.e. was there really no way I could have gone?) when she clearly thought I wasn't around to hear. I thought that was funny.

GOD, I've got a gob on me, eh? I'll shush.

Ah! Yes, it does.

Apparently the maximum amount of messages I can have stored before ingoing and outgoing mail ceases is 60% of my storage space.

Kinda makes you wonder what the point of the remaining 40% is.

I think if we could figure out the answer to that one, then the universe would make a lot more sense.

...

Then, of course, its secrets being all revealed, it would have to collapse upon itself and re-form. Kind of a toss up as to whether knowing everything would be worth the subsequent destruction.
