American Idol, S5, Top 24 - Boys
Feb. 23rd, 2006 06:06 pmOkay, so Wednesday night we watching American Idol saw the girls. Last night, it was all about the guys. I watched this with my sister, so I included some of her comments as well.
And probably no one cares about these entries except me, because I've never seen a sign that anyone on my friends list is actually into Idol. But I still want to make these posts each week because I'd like written record of what I thought.
Again, I think my attributions for the songs are right, but I'm not totally sure.
01. Patrick Hall - "Come To My Window" (Melissa Etheridge) He was obviously nervous to be first, and commented on that. In the first few moments of the song, he breathed into the mike, and I winced. Simon said that he was fidgety, and in retrospect he maybe was, but it wasn't really obvious or obnoxious.
This was a fair version of the song, pretty much in tune with great tone most of the time. I didn't see anything odd about the song choice either, except that it's not the ballads he's done before. I actually really like bouncing along to it. Can I say that I'm REALLY tired of the judges telling people to stretch and not play things safe, and then turning around and telling them to stop singing a slightly different style? Very irritating. But yes - good solid singing, and a nice finish.
02. David Radford - "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (We Will Rock You(?)) Oh. My. God. Someone remove his vocal cords; Radford (I can't call him David) needs to stop singing IMMEDIATELY.
I hate having to say that, because I LOVE crooner music. Radford just...sucks at it. He has a horrible 5-note range. He's flat. He literally CANNOT hit enough notes to stay in tune. He's a joke. He looked like he was having a grand mal seizure on stage - would it have killed him to arrange the soles of his shoes to be parallel with the floor? He also looked like he was taking a really big shit. And was I the only one who got the impression that his voice was coming from nowhere? Why is this kid supposed to be sexy again?
Needs. to go. home. But won't this week, because millions of little girls across America think he's cute.
03. Bucky Covington - "Simple Man" (Lynyrd Skynyrd) I hadn't heard anything he's done yet, so I was pleasantly surprised, I suppose. It was nice enough, but forgettable, and Bucky's image needs work. He looks like he hasn't shaved or showered in a week. He also looks, as my sister said, "Like he's been stoned every day of his life." Hell, at one point before he sang, he mentioned that he's often unable to remember the lyrics to the song he's singing. ("I just got really good at humming.") Stoner! He's got a rocker voice, but it was a bit too much gravel and air, and he pushed the song out like he was giving birth. He's slightly more attractive while singing, though. I'm not sure why.
Also, I loved Randy getting offended when Simon told Bucky that he sounds like a guy who plays bars. ("I played some of those bars! Maybe all of them!")
04. Will Makar - "I Want You Back" (Jackson 5) Okay, this was BALLSY. Does Will even realize how ballsy? But hey, I actually don't think he butchered this. It was age appropriate, controlled, and he's got damn good showmanship for his age. He wasn't fidgety or overdoing it. He certainly did not blow anyone away last night, but it was fun. Also, the colored bubble background for him was great and actually complimented the song. (It even looked good with his outfit!) I can't disagree with Simon's assessment that it was "average" in comparison to some people's "great" on the show, but I still really like Will Makar.
I really rolled my eyes over, "At least he's still in tune," from Randy and Paula, though. Uh, guys, that's great. I can sing in tune, too. It's not hard. Forgetting the point of the competition for 500, Alex.
05. Sway Penala - "Reasons" (Earth Wind & Fire) WHAT THE FUCK? This entire song was in falsetto! The whole thing! Now, I actually LIKED his "pimp" outfit when he came out. I thought it was a bit daring and showy. But the singing changed my mind. It just made the thing so over-the-top and gross. The falsetto was horrible and out of tune, really sharp in some points. I just wanted to huck something at the TV. Even the girls looked confused in the background. Sway, what are you doing?
Also needs to go home. I never liked him, anyway. I can't believe the funeral director guy got cut so this "pimp" could have his spot.
06. Chris Daughtry - "Wanted Dead or Alive" (Jon Bon Jovi) Now, THIS was probably the best male performance of the night. Chris has a real thing going here - good-looking in a way that appeals broadly, with a great rocker-and-possibly-country voice. I thought it was very odd how he started the performance leaning way over though, instead of just picking up the standing mike from the start. But he did this song real justice, had a fantastic finish, was just very right for the song.
And he got the first compliment of the night from Simon! "Superb," wow.
07. Kevin Covais - "One Last Cry" (Bryan McKnight) Now, I like Kevin. I really do. I know he's getting some "underdog" votes because of how brutal Simon's been with him, but I think he honestly deserves some votes. He's not going to win or anything, but he's got a great voice. Good tone, although slightly nasal - that works with ballads, I guess. Every note was in tune, his interpretation was sound. I see him being great in a few years. I actually got goosebumps in there somewhere - he's got some really nice notes.
Simon, of course, had to tell him that he'd only appeal to people who are, "Over 90 and hard of hearing." WHAT? Someone said that Simon is incapable of criticizing people he likes or praising people he hates, and I think that's accurate.
08. Gedeon McKinney - "Shout" (The Isley Brothers) Now, I hate this guy. So, I think, does much of America. He's cocky beyond belief - he can do no wrong, in HIS opinion! His, "You've got to have IT, and I have IT!" speech at the end of Hollywood Week impressed no one, least of all me.
Still, I couldn't hate this performance. It was a silly song to do, but I still danced. I couldn't hate his dancing either, although some people apparently did. I loved Simon blasting him, even though the critique was nonsensical. He could be a surprise early boot tonight, just because people don't like him.
09. Elliott Yamin - "If You Really Love Me" (Stevie Wonder) Well, he's got a great voice. Definitely one of the top performances of the night, although I felt it was slightly jerky in the middle. His appearance - mainly his crooked teeth - are off-putting, but I think this guy has the quality of making it sound easy, even if he's sweating like he's facing the firing squad the whole time. I really think Simon was overstating things when he said this guy is, "The best male vocalist this show's ever had." But still DAMN good. His runs were great too, and not oversung.
Randy! What's with the damn name-dropping! Just get to your thoughts on the song. I'm tired of listening to the endless reminders that Randy is "the dawg" and how many stars he's worked with. "Mariah and I were talking about this, and..." Bitch, please!
And Ryan? ALL OVER the men last night. He's not half as huggy and physical with the women. Put me in the "suspicion of closetation" camp.
10. Bobby Bennett - "Copacabana" (Barry Manilow) Oh, dear. Really, really, bad song choice. Unfortunately, this guy did it for his grandmother, and he's not the kind of guy to go back on a promise to his Grandma, obviously. It probably cost him his spot on this show.
It was very, very lounge singer. I thought I was in a Las Vegas casino lobby for a second there. And the starry background didn't help, or the shiny lapels on his suit. DAMN! Didn't anyone tell these Idol kids how to dress?! Still, Bobby has always been EXTREMELY likable, and I'm so sorry that he's probably now gone. I think he could have had a few good performances. I can't disagree with Simon's comment, "There must be people watching tonight who think we're off our rockers," but I want to see him have another shot, personally.
And then Bobby was all over RYAN! Who's zooming who?
11. Ace Young - "Father Figure" (George Michael) What. a. creepy. song.
I seriously DO NOT CARE that this song was ever popular. It is just the freakiest song, with the freakiest lyrics EVER. As my sister said, "very NAMBLA." I mean, Ace is the "sex symbol" for this show, and he comes out with a song like THAT? And then attempts to eye-fuck the audience at the end? Whatthefuck.
(Although personally, I thought that so-called "eye-fuck" looked completely reptilian.
*stares around, panning the room with dead eyes*
*TONGUE!*
*stare, pan, stare*)
It was...nice enough, I guess. He has no real power behind his voice, he's just depending on the "sexy" breathiness combined with occasionally actually sustaining a note.
I do LOVE Paula for her comment about all her girl friends ("and some of the boys!") swooning over him though. Best part of his performance was Paula's comment, actually. Can you tell I'm underwhelmed by "Ace?"
12. Taylor Hicks - "Levon" (Elton John) Okay, I'm in the middle about Taylor Hicks. I like the guts it takes to rock the premature grey. I like that he's just the guy he is. And I think he has a decent voice. But I am SO TIRED of not being able to make out what he's singing. The guy needs elocution lessons or something...he's very Dylan-esqe about the mumbling.
Still, nice song with a sweet beginning. Apparently, it's an unusual choice for him, although he did give his reason as, "I had a great father figure," so he wanted to sing a song to reflect that. (My sister: "Did he hold his tiny hand?")
Simon saying, "I was wrong," (about Taylor not going through to this round) was great, as was Randy confusedly referring to a harmonica as a harp. And Ryan getting in his dig about Randy not making any "canine references" when discussing Taylor's performance. (Is it just me, or did Ryan REALLY get some back there?)

Date: 2006-02-24 03:33 pm (UTC)Can you friend me so I can keep up with this week to week?
Re: Hi
Date: 2006-02-24 04:16 pm (UTC)Oh dang, I even knew that too, somewhere in the back of my head. I wonder if that will ever get clarified, since I know quite a few people think that was a slip on his part.
And sure, I'd be happy to friend you! Ha, this means I need to keep up with the show? *grin* I'm really hoping I can, I want to have my predictions and such down before the results show each week.
I feel I should mention though that I'm not actually black, I'm white. I try to keep my nose clean in
I just thought I should put that upfront so it wasn't a nasty surprise. Either way, all these American Idol posts will be public.

Date: 2006-02-24 04:25 pm (UTC)I've been reading the ADD stuff. I'm ADHD and tried Adderol. I had a heart attack when I got off it. It's also very addictive and your tolerance for it goes up and up over time. Just a heads up.
Oh yeah, and please comment on the locked entries if you have time to read through my journal. I like to hear everyone's take on what I've posted.
Re: Hi
Date: 2006-02-24 04:51 pm (UTC)I don't think we'll have any problems; just know that when I say white people, I don't mean every white person in the world only the ones who follow the subsequent description.
Naw, I understand that, it being a classic white-person reaction to take things personally because we're used to be addressed as individuals only. And often, things apply to the vast majority of white people anyway, if not all, including me. So.
I've been reading the ADD stuff. I'm ADHD and tried Adderol. I had a heart attack when I got off it.
Wow, a real heart attack? That's the first time I've heard that, that is truly scary.
I don't think I really want to be on meds forever, but I am really drowning in school, and with my organizational skills I think I will end up living in squalor when I move out if I don't get a chance to develop those skills. I am concerned about being too dependent on them, so I'm hoping just to find one that works well enough that I can build some foundations, if that makes sense.
Oh yeah, and please comment on the locked entries if you have time to read through my journal. I like to hear everyone's take on what I've posted.
You mean older entries? Will do.
