<--- Officially a wine drinker now.

Tried several whites, reds and a dessert wine this Christmas. Some of them I actually don't mind and don't gag on! Just took the right ones.

*toasts you all with his dessert wine*

Happy Holidays, all!

(That includes those of you who celebrate something other then Christmas. I may have forgotten you in previous years; I'm too woozy to look. My bad if I did.)

Have a great 2006!

Happy Holidays!

Two things.
First of all, could you point me to some of the comments on the original Brokeback rage (http://www.livejournal.com/community/queer_rage/109203.html) that particularly bothered you? I trust your judgment and I can't seem to figure out where to begin/end except to yell at everyone to go home.

Second of all, I haven't discussed this w/[livejournal.com profile] nerdanel nee [livejournal.com profile] tribe2003 yet, but I think you'd make an awesome mod. Any interest? Please? Before I devise a way to actually hit people through my computer screen?
:P

Oh, er. The things that teed me off about that rage are, as I said to [livejournal.com profile] montrealais, personal to me. Perhaps I was just a bit touchy; I don't know that anyone in that thread truly deserves mod action or anything. Hmm. I suppose I should actually apologize, because in retrospect, I don't think I was supportive enough of that rage, although I understand the OP's feelings. (For the most part.)

Points 3 and 4 are all in this thread by [livejournal.com profile] twentytens. Eventually, I suppose he made clear that he just thinks the majority of fiction sucks, period. Although his comments pinged my radar, because I've gotten the sense that he has a low opinion of women in general. It particularly bugged me that his first comment was "the story was written by a woman," with no further explanation, as if that were all that were necessary to say that the story was terrible. Not cool.

Points 1a and 2a were me being especially snippy; I don't think I actually saw anything like that, but as I have frequently seen those sorts of statements follow from 1 and 2, I included them as "the first person to say..." (I just know somebody's thinking it, although I doubt it's the OP.)

2 and 1... I can understand the OP's rage that the representations of queerness in the media are very limited. I feel that. I'm just frustrated that when we talk about that, it always has to be framed in the manner of, "Why can't we see more of X instead of Y?" Why can't we end the sentence at X? Why do our representations of ourselves always have to be at the expense of someone else? It really sort of bothers me that we're going to rage against..."gender-normative" queers dealing with heterosexism as an oppressive force, as if their story is unimportant because it isn't queer enough, or because straight people can watch it without covering their eyes.

Part II

I guess this thread also drive me nuts.

1) I understand being frustrated with a representation you feel focuses so much on sexuality that said person/character is presented as nothing other than a sexual being; but I also get the sense that we edge into an area of judgment on whether or not someone/some character is "flaunting it" and general disapproval of their gender presentation, which isn't cool. ("I want a movie where the characters are not GAAAY first and foremost.")

2) "i absolutely dispise will and grace. and queer eye. i often compare them to minstrel shows." That one made my skin itch. To start with, it was generally white men performing in minstrel shows; I don't think that's comparable to Queer Eye, or a show where some of the actors are gay and some are straight. Secondly, that comparison strikes me as another form of appropriation of the struggles of POC.

Most importantly though, minstrel shows were intended to be savage mockery of black people in America. Suggesting that, say, the real men on Queer Eye (who, by all accounts, are not "acting" much at all, but mostly just being themselves) seems really rather...phobic? I don't know that I have the right word. But "minstrel show" is such an ugly term; if Queer Eye is a "minstrel show" then the guys on it are Not Okay, neh? If Will is on a "minstrel show" then it must not be okay to be the type of gay man that he is (albeit highly fictionalized).

3) "they either have to be flaming homos designed to entertain straight people"

"i'm sure the movie may or may not have portrayed the way someone lives, somewhere. thats not my point. my point is it fell in line with a specific narrative of gay people palatable to mainstream america.

i'd like to see new types of characters.that dont play by rules set up by straight society. thats my point"

^If it's acceptable to straight people, it's not an okay narrative to have on TV or in movies anymore? Just goes back to my earlier point about naming our preferred representations at the expense of someone else.

That's about it, I guess. Like I said, I could be being too nitpicky and touchy about all of that.

Also, apologies if this is a tad scattered. Didn't get a lot of sleep last night.

Also, about the moderation: if you're looking for someone with a lot of time on their hands, it's unfortunately not me. :P (As is probably obvious by the timing of this response.) At the moment, I'm working full-time. Next week, I go back to school full-time and work part-time. I do have a laptop that I use in virtually every class, so in theory I can check lj any time of day. But I'm also in journalism, which has odd hours.

Just saying...I love the comm and I'd be happy to help if that's what you guys decide you want, but my contribution may be limited.

That's Thom Filicia. Yeah, you probably should know. *grins, pokes you*

Happy Holidays! I can't believe I didn't respond this, but I guess I only wrote the comment in my head. Or lj is being weird...you didn't get two comments from this by me, did you?

Anyway, I hope things are doing at least a bit better for you right now.

I would be skeptical that it's really been 2 weeks (not that I don't trust you, just that it can't REALLY have been that long, can it?), except that last night I logged on to read [livejournal.com profile] boondocks_comic and was totally shocked at how far back I had to go to catch up. So, er...

Dad took me out to dinner last night and said that maybe I should go out with him more often because "It sounds like you need more breaks. Every time I call, you're working or asleep." I was like, "!!! Did my father really say that?!" But I go back to school Monday, and while I AM working on the weekends through January (my boss is on vacation, so my hours have to be set ahead of time), I intend to tell her to cut it down to one shift a week when she gets back.

My tuition is paid, so, eh... I don't need all the shifts.

Oh, and LOL @ "THAT Thom." You know this one's Carson, right?

*hugs*
