Okay, this needed to be said, and since some assholes have been trolling [livejournal.com profile] blackfolk, it was:

"...if individuals are without food, water & shelter they are not looting & they never will be. Your white privilege may allow you to sit on high and prejudge others about whey they do or don't do, but until your translucent, pompously self righteous asses are wading around in chest deep waters surrounded by snakes, sharks, alligators, electrical wires, etc? DON'T SAY SHIT. DON'T EVEN FIX YOUR FUCKING MOUTHS LIKE YOU *BOUT* TO SAY SOME SHIT."

Taking food is not looting

Taking anything drinkable is not looting.

Taking ten pairs of designer jeans? IS NOT LOOTING. (Oh yes, you still have a closet full of clothes? Shut up. You have no idea if those "looters" have clothing left or not. Maybe they do, but YOU'RE NOT THERE.)

Shoes? Not looting.

Diapers? Not looting.

Batteries, flashlights? Not looting.

Blankets? Not looting.

Small pieces of furniture? Not looting.

Lumber? Not looting.

Especially if you're BLACK and POOR, and nobody who saw this coming bothered to fucking PROVIDE for your LIFE, but preferred to let you DIE because you don't matter.

SHUT. UP.

I don't EVEN want to see it on my friendslist. I see you say that shit, you're GONE. I've never been more serious.

Agreed. It's still horrible that the majority of "looters" have to be black/whatever the media is showing. I'm sure there are more than a good share of white guys "finding" shit, too.

And damn, usually jk_fabiani has some good points, but he got toasted on that thread.

TVs? Computers? Very much looting.

But otherwise agreed.

actually, if you really stretch and think about it, it could be entirely survival. I mean, there are places there where, some 5 days later now, there still have been no signs of relief, no government agencies coming to rescue and rebuild, nothing. So, people who had everything destroyed and who managed to scramble to pick up whatever they could scavange from whatever businesses were in the area -businesses which will never reopen, or which if they did, would certainly do so without the inventory that was left in the store to rot-
those people will be in a slightly better position than people who hadn't managed to scrape anything up. Barter is really everything...

I heard someone on the radio mention they had a cousin there and they offerred to wire them several thousand dollars to help them, and the person said no, because 1.) there was no way to pick up the money, and 2.) the cash would be useless to him because everything around him was chest deep in water.

Very well said. I've seen some comments about the whole "looting" deal that have made me really angry. It must be so easy for such assholes to sit back and comment on these supposed crimes or what not when they're not even close to those in this living nightmare!

totally agree... there can be no looting when the area is a devastated wasteland. there is only survival.

who among us can or should judge what any of us would do to provide for our family in such a circumstance when bodies are... literally... everywhere.

anything... anything at all, might help a person or a family member to survive. In a wasteland, money is worthless...

The blatant racism inherent in the reporting is just... infuriating. so prejudicial as to be an embarassment on our whole society.

Put any of those reporters in the same circumstance, and see how high and mighty they are.
