*wrings hands*
Feb. 21st, 2005 07:58 pmI got a job.
In BIG text because it's BIG news. My aunt Krista got me a job working at Taco Time. Or rather, she got me the interview by recommending me highly (despite not knowing what I've been doing for the past 3 years), and the manager flipped over me at my interview. See, my bullshit was "exactly what we need."
I'm relieved that now when I see "NOW HIRING" signs, I can put down the guilt, dread and panic.
But now I also get to dread how badly I'm going to do, how soon I'm going to be fired, etc. and stress over that.
People have been trying to reassure me that working in fast food IS possible, even with no ability to multitask and no real working- or short-term memory to speak of.
I start tomorrow. Give me luck, universe.

Date: 2005-02-22 04:23 am (UTC)Also, there was a woman with a crooked eye...and she ran drive thru...poorly. I could actually do her job way faster than she ever did it...I could actually run all drive thru by myself during peak times. But she got promoted to team leader.
Short term memory not required...unless your counting change, but you can always just count it before moving on to anything else, close the drawer when your done so you know you did it.
Good luck!!!

Date: 2005-02-23 05:07 pm (UTC)I've worked lots in fast food (still do!) and it is very simple. The only thing even fairly negative it seems is sometimes it can get irritating dealing with the general public, but that's not really a big deal.
I'm so happy for you

Date: 2005-02-27 02:21 pm (UTC)you zone out for a couple of months and things actually happen. ;)
I hope it works out great for you and you have fun. I know my first few jobs were some of the funnest I've had. There's something about a lot of young people being left to run what is actually a valuable and expensive business that just makes me giddy.
no memory??

no memory??
Heh. My memory can be near-perfect with certain things, and with others, it's non-existent, to the point where it can be a real issue.
Example, from working at the till:
Me: What would you like to drink with your Combo, sir?
Customer: I'll have a medium Diet Pepsi, please.
Me: *grabs cup right beside him, goes to pour drink, has no idea what he's pouring* Uh...what was your drink again?
...I do that with nearly every customer. I'm sure I don't look like the brightest kid on the block.
Anyway, I've found little tricks. Like I want to get a till that's RIGHT beside the fountain drinks, so I only have to remember drinks for half a second. (And if I still forget, I can confirm with the customer just a second before I pour.) And if I get Till 1, it's also RIGHT beside the fries, so I have a visual reminder if they ordered something that comes with fries. When I shout orders back to the rail, I always keep glancing over my shoulder and meeting the customer's eyes as I'm doing it, so they know they can change or add to their order if I get something wrong/leave something out. (I want to look approachable that way, so that they don't just leave pissed because their order's wrong.) I can check the receipt coming out of the till just before I shout orders back, so I don't have to keep asking the customer what they ordered, but the good part is that now I'm pretty familiar with the till's keypad, so I just try to remember the buttons I punched. (My visual memory is MUCH better than my auditory memory. Things people SAY pretty much just bounce off an invisible wall around me. Half the time, I literally cannot remember something someone said a second after they've said it.)
I know the others have noticed that I confirm with the customer a lot. I don't know if that's okay, or if I'm getting slack because I'm new. I hope it's okay, because if they want me to stop, we might have some unhappy customers. I did have one girl who asked for taco salad with no sour cream and extra salsa, and we had to remake it because I forgot to tell the rail to leave off the sour.
But I'm not the only one who can screw up and forget orders. My rail person did it two or three times (and I KNOW I gave the order right), so at least I'm not the only one.
Heh. That's probably a lot more than you needed to know.

Date: 2005-03-04 06:34 am (UTC)I don't think it's bad at all that you confirm with the customers a lot. I know that if someone does that when I'm ordering something, it makes me feel a lot better, like they really care about getting things right rather than just testing their memory.
In fact, every once in a while you get a waiter or waitress at a sit down restaurant who doesn't write anything down for an entire table. That always makes me really anxious.
Anyways I hope your work ends up being really fun and profitable too!
