We have our computer back!

It was the power unit that blew. Apparently, you have to clean the fan. No one ever informed us of this. I feel like a real dunce now.

My sister is living on the computer again. Since we have it back, the television has been completely forgotten. Well, almost completely - she's watching it now.

Oh yes, we have TELEVISION now. My sister whined endlessly during the long internet hiatus, so my mother got us a basic cable package to shut her up. It's incredible, rational arguments on my part for the benefits of getting TV do nothing, but as soon as my sister whines, getting television becomes a priority.

The basic cable package from Shaw sucks rocks, though. We've got Much More Music, some news stations, a few soap operas, several French stations and something that looks like it's an Arab station. We don't even get NBC, so we can't watch Queer Eye, which was half the reason Mom wanted to get TV. I think this is the "basic cable" package they sell to the people in China who live in little huts.

We can watch The Simpsons, which is cool. I guess we'll finally be able to say that we are in touch with that aspect of pop culture. I've always liked Matt Groening's stuff, especially Childhood is Hell.

I've noticed that I have no real desire to sit down in front of the boob tube, unless something I have already decided I want to watch is on. So I've watched some news programs, a great special on the space elevator, a few episodes of the Simpsons and a few Pop-Up Videos, and that's about it. Not having TV for most of your childhood really does keep you from getting addicted to this thing.

My sister is not so immune, however, and I know that when I was a few years younger, I couldn't be dragged away from the TV at my grandmother's. I don't think she's going to end up with the same immunity to the flashing images, and it's only a difference of a few years between us.

Something to remember for when I have kids.

Ya'll have Pop-Up Videos with this package? Jeez, I would love that!

Oh, yes, we do. Recently, I watched a Pop-Up Wham! video - I think it was "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." It mentioned that George Michael and the other guy admitted later to shoving shuttlecocks in their pants to look bigger. Then throughout the video, this image of a shuttlecock repeatedly popped up. Had my sister nearly wetting her pants. :)
