Just because I'm annoying and obnoxious and no Canadians of voting age on my friends list needed to hear it YET AGAIN:

Don't forget to vote today, Canada!

I'm just...really anxious about this election. And obviously, not just because it's my first.

Edit: Demand better [than Stephen Harper]. Vote [for someone else].

as an american, i am curious about the nature of the canadian election. is it similar to the U.S. situation where we want to get an evil dude out of office?

i was listening to National Public Radio (more liberal station in the U.S. in case you weren't familiar), and there was a story about the Canadian election. They mentioned that one particular candidate is in danger of losing support simply because of his affiliation with Bush. I don't remember the name of the guy though, perhaps Stephen Harper?

Not nearly as dire, although some people might disagree with me on that. The guys in power right now - the Liberals - are in disgrace because it was revealed early this year that for years, they've been lining the pockets of their buddies with hundreds of millions of taxpayer's money. Not good. Up until Dec., they were a shoo-in for this election. Now they're in big trouble, and for the first time since 1993, the Conservatives might actually win at least a minority government. That scares me more than a corrupt liberal government.

Possibly. Protestors have waved signs in his passage that say, "Harper + Bush." I know that Harper personally wants Canada to join the war on Iraq (which goes against general Canadian opinion). Someone told me he might have publically retracted that statement...but that doesn't necessarily mean his ideas have changed, only that he's not voicing them.

And he has stated that he wants Canada to re-establish "alliances with our democratic partners." Which means, if I've read between the lines correctly, "kiss Bush's ass." Unlike the Liberal leaders.

Besides that, he wants to completely change Canada's "available for all" health care system and make it a tiered system where the rich get better care than the poor.

I'm not going to say that our current health care system isn't buckling under the strain of its many problems, but the idea of a tiered system offends me to the core.

I'm really scared he'll get in.
