Before I forget...

In this recent entry of mine, [livejournal.com profile] sardonic_girl commented with a bunch of questions I thought were interesting to ponder, so I asked for her permission to repost them.

For example, how many of our melanin-challenged friends here will see a black comedy but not a black drama? How many of us know much about black culture outside of the shit pandered by the media? Like Dan said, he was surprised when he found out that Black people had different hair types. Most white people are. Yet we, as black people must not only understand our history to be seen as real, we must know your history in order to survive (this is called double-consciousness.) On a more personal note, how many of you are kinda surprised deep down when you hear an intelligent person of color? Do you think, oh s/he's so articulate (even though there's no reason we shouldn't be)? Do you write off our anger as just 'typical Black anger'? Do you realize that most Black people are in fact suburban (60% live in the suburbs and are middle class.) Basically, do you assume that you are being progressive just because you have a couple of nice thoughts about the 'other' people who you don't intimately interact with, thus proving that you are not a bad person?

I thought they were interesting questions for me, anyway. So I wanted to share.

She's right about those things- but it's also true that it's harder and harder to make progress when people take away whatever little joy you get out of making said progress. "Oh yeah, you think you've done something? ::SMACK:: YOU'RE NO GOOD! RACIST WHITE PEOPLE! BRAAAAAUGH!".

I'm sorry. Don't mind the ranting, because she is right.

Im not sure I understand the bit about "typical black anger". I didnt realise there was such a thing. Does this mean that there is a "typical white passive-agressiveness"? Would that not just be "typical passive-agressiveness" as well as "typical anger". Is it fair to infer that it is an abnormality for a white person to be particularly angry, because if that's true then I must be living in the most fucked up area ever.

I just read that last comment back and realised that it doesnt make a whole lot of sense in the way I've put it. I have problems expressing myself clearly. Sorry bout that.

Hmm.

She sounds cool. I think I shall check 'er journal out.

Reminds me of a movie starring John Travolta called "White Man's Burden" or something. It's really good, one of those role-reversal things. I liked it. It made me contemplate how I view people in general. It was good.

omg... I have to admit that on the one hand, her comments ring perfectly true to me, and I can just nod and say, "yes, you are so right. that is just bad," etc...

but on the other hand...
what she says makes part of me even more afraid to say anything to black people at all

Oh, and I totally agree with [livejournal.com profile] emperor_boy and [livejournal.com profile] camp_actor... and I totally love [livejournal.com profile] sleepykid999's icons!!! *swoons*

Oh, and... um... is that, like, a '48 Ford, or something?
