And throw in a muzzle, too...
Mar. 31st, 2003 10:36 amQuick entry before I get to work:
Thank bob somebody might be getting the right idea.
I often find children simply adorable, but good GOD, they are INSUFFERABLE on planes, etc. Keep the little brats locked up in the back, that's a good idea.
Okay, no...I'm not serious about that. But I do think that sectioning a plane to allow for a "child-free" zone is a great idea. What about someone traveling with a migraine, or some other problem that might be aggravated by a screaming little rugrat?
I'm not sure I agree with making the back section for children. After all, that area is SMALLER, which could only make the problem of bored kids worse. Still...could be an idea to work on.
Of course, this mainly stems from my frustration last night. I couldn't do ANYTHING on the computer because I couldn't even hear myself think over the screaming of the little kids that some relative brought to my sister's birthday party. Jesus. Just get a f*cking babysitter, they don't need to come.
I mean...these kids were having a screaming contest. Literally. And the parents just ignored them, and said, "oh isn't that cute!" Um, no, idiot, it's not cute. Shut those little fuckers UP.
I mean....how incredibly rude is it to bring your kids to someone else's home and just let them get so obnoxious that various members of the household (it wasn't just me, either) have to retreat to the relative peace and quiet of their bedrooms? MY SISTER had to go to her room because she couldn't stand the noise level, and it was HER BIRTHDAY.
People. Feh.

hm...
oh, but geez... that sounds so awful about your sister's birthday party.
I hope that she was able to have a relatively good time, anyway??
Um... no pun intended. ;)
Gods yes
Date: 2003-03-31 01:35 pm (UTC)Nothing worse than being trapped on a plane with your crying baby and not being able to do anything about it, knowing that she's probably bothering people but mostly just that she's miserable and I'm helpless. The one flight we took that was pretty empty and I could walk her around was better. The times when her ears wouldn't pop, though, and she's too little to understand why it fucking hurts - *cringe* *cry*.
For Dan: the reason kids are unpleasant to be around on planes is that planes are unpleasant places for kids to be. Most parents I know understand this and try to keep the flying to a minimum. That sucks about your sister's bday party, though. *hugs her*
Re: Gods yes
Date: 2003-03-31 09:30 pm (UTC)Um, they're not pleasant places for adults to be either. I remember the last time I flew. And nobody wants to pay good money to sit on a plane and listen to a baby SCREAM for hours. (I can hear you now. Gosh, such lack of compassion.)
Which is precisely why this proposed section is a good thing, if they can make it work. The mothers don't have to worry about anyone else but other mothers, and other people don't have to listen to a screaming infant/child. Especially, if they say, have migraines, as I've mentioned. Or are severely sleep-deprived from traveling a lot. Why should they suffer just because some kid is too young for impulse control?

Agreed, that. Though having been an adult and a child on a plane, I'd say it's a lot more tolerable now that I know how to pop my ears, and now that I know why it hurts if I can't, and now that I know why I have to sit in a very small space for hours on end. Not to mention being more sedentary so it's not so much a chore to begin with. On the whole I'd say it's worse for the kids, at least the ones too little to think being on a plane is exciting.
(I can hear you now. Gosh, such lack of compassion.)
Well... it's compassionate towards adults with migraines who lack sleep! And that's reasonable, because there's things that can be done to maybe make them more comfortable, but probably not so much that can be done for babies on planes. But that you said that makes me wonder if you don't see a lack of compassion in yourself here... ? I'm not picking, just wondering how you feel.

Yes! I totally agree with this. Might not help the kids much but would sure be less stress on mothers (meaning, me). Believe me, I have no desire to have other people inconvenienced by my child, and it's very hard to avoid that on a plane.
*hugs*

At risk of sounding snitty ...

hee!!

Re: At risk of sounding snitty ...
Date: 2003-03-31 09:37 pm (UTC)Kids are just different sized people with a different set of obnoxious habits.
No, kids are different sized people who can be a million times cuter and a thousand times more obnoxious than the most obnoxious adult you can find. Bad breath and wandering hands are nothing in comparison to a screaming little brat.
And if, on some distant date in my career, I'm on a plane at 2 in the morning and I'm severely jet lagged and badly in need of sleep, the last fucking thing I'm going to need to hear is a kid's shrill screaming. And if I do, I may be violent.
So to prevent all this from happening - and I'm sure many people feel the same - throw the little people in the sound proofed room and lock the door.
Wow, I'm coming off like real asshole, aren't I? Well, the only thing more annoying than screaming kids is adults who DEFEND the screaming kids.
wow
Date: 2003-03-31 10:28 pm (UTC)Um, that's a matter of opinion. Also, "brat" appears to be an intentionally inflammatory term as used here.

Well. That's frightening, and unfortunately entirely plausible. And I'm sorry about that, because I had at one time hoped you'd meet Gina. Doesn't seem very likely now.

Yes.

Um, yeah. Thanks so much.
*crying*
Re: wow
Date: 2003-04-01 05:46 am (UTC)Yep.
Well. That's frightening, and unfortunately entirely plausible.
No, it's not. I never believed in violence toward children, and that comment was both highly sarcastic and flippant.
And I'm sorry about that, because I had at one time hoped you'd meet Gina. Doesn't seem very likely now.
...I never thought that was likely.
Um, yeah. Thanks so much.
That comment wasn't directed at you.
It's my journal.
I stand by my last statement.
Calmer now...
Date: 2003-04-01 08:17 am (UTC)I don't like people taking that tone with me, especially when it's about something personal. And shitheads ruining my sister's party is VERY personal.
Saying that children are only as obnoxious as adults is stupid, IMHO. How many times have you seen an adult ruin a party with bad breath? When adults ruin parties, it's usually because they're ACTING like children.
I am absoultely infuriated when adults defend children's behaviour like that. I understand that kids sometimes have trouble controlling themselves, and that's why it's the adult's job to at least try to control them. An adult who is defending that child on the grounds that they are no worse than an adult with B.O. is not taking responsiblity for their child.

Date: 2003-04-01 04:11 pm (UTC)2.) Unacceptably rude of the relative with the shriekers not to graciously bow out and take the noisemaker home. The sister (or someone, at least) should've taken her aside and reminded her of her obligation not to provide a hideous racket.
