So I took this quiz I got off of [livejournal.com profile] lexanlet and I got this:

I Am A Straight Man
No doubt about it You're straight as an arrow. You're secure with your sexuality, and ok with others. If anyone calls you a "fag" you're able to walk away. You are the modern defination of a "real man"
Take the Sexual Orientation Quiz

I said that I like kittens and that my preferred drink would be Jack and Coke. Then I went back and changed my "drink" answer to beer, just for fun, and got this:

I Am In The Closet
Hold up cowboy. You're not fooling anyone. Speeking of cowboys we all know that you've had thoes dirty thoughts about the marlboro man that made you go running to the confessional. And God only knows what goes on in there. Maybe you should jsut drop the cover story's, buy some nice china, give up thoes wrangler jeans and hit up the Gap.
Take the Sexual Orientation Quiz

Now I ask you...what, exactly, does this say? A man is not allowed to like beer...and pick the name "Jay" over "Jamie"...and pick Heather Graham over Demi Moore...and not be a closet case?

This is a meanless internet quiz, true, but it reminded me of the whole attitude that a man who likes all the sterotypical "man" things is faking it somehow, hiding something because he is insecure.

If we think that someone should be allowed to express their gender however they wish, does this not extend to straight men who like beer, fast cars and sports?

Why do we seem to think there is something automatically "false" about this?

I think of myself as rather far from that sterotypical "man" ideal (despite my rather damning straight-acting.com quiz scores), but I'm peeved when I see that.

Somehow, I feel like I should speak in defense of stereotypically masculine straight guys.

It's not their fault, okay? They were born that way.

(One of the best quotes I heard to this effect: a guy commented once on lj, "Seems like in order to have your gender mannerisms affirmed by biology these days, you have to be gay." Or something to that effect.)

I think one of my friends feels a little guilty for being straight. That worries me.

Yes...that would worry me, too.

The most annoying thing - to me - is to see people deliberately trying to make straight people feel like asses. It can happen; straight people aren't invulnerable because they're at the top of the food chain, so to speak.

I've noted that there is a far-to-pervasive an attitude among some gay people that straights are all:

1) Evil and in the closet

or

2) stupid and clueless

or

3) personal pets

And I hate the word "breeder" used as an insult aa much as I hate "fag" used in that way. Maybe more so, since gays should know better.

The problem with any members of an alternative group is that, when in large numbers, they tend to get snobbish. It's an us against the world thing, and it's stupid.

I admit to having called people who I know are straight "fag" or "queer"...but apart from anything I find that this displays a simple irony. It rarely upsets the people I know, except this one guy who did get really upset, but then that's cos he probably is in the closet.

Most people just laugh at me when i say it. I find this singularly offensive as if they used as an insult against me, they would expect me to be upset etc...although that wouldnt happen as I rarely get upset about things like this.

Wow, im rambling...sorry.

Interesting journal. Would you mind awfully if I added you to my friends list?...

Sure, go ahead. I add back.

I think when it's all a joke, it's no big deal, but I get a little tired of seeing some gay people make cracks about how horrible it would be to be straight. How is that any better than the reverse? Blah.

Yeh i guess. It's up to everyone what they wanna be. What I do get annoyed with is people who cant make up they're minds. (im not talking of bisexual people, that's fine as long as they know they're bi), but ppl who say "Im gay" one minute, then "Im straight" the next. It's so confusing. Actually I guess that's why I get annoyed cos I cant figure out whether I should move in on them because they're constantly changing their minds.
lol.

Yeah, that is confusing...once I had somone tell me he was straight, and then later he said he was bi. I expressed some surprise (I really never would have guessed), and he said, "What are you talking about? I've always been gay!"

But I think sometimes that can be a thing where someone who is bi is saying just what they feel more like at the time.

I suppose. Still they should make that clear. It's confusing for us!
