Why are the Ood even freakier the second time around? I don't HAVE a sofa to hide behind in our computer nook, dammit!

Yes, I am a massive wimp. I almost walked out of Sixth Sense, people. I think Doctor Who is almost too much for me.

Why are there so few lights in this room?!

Doctor Who is actually quite frightening. On some of the commentary on the DVD's, they mention times when they've thought that what they were making might be too horrifying to put on television, then they thought, "Hey, it's Doctor Who. People expect a good scare," and put it on as is.

Have you seen "Blink" yet? If you haven't, I'll warn you that I slept with the lights on for three nights after that one.

Noted. See, this is the kind of useful thing I Need To Know. Especially because my fourth and fifth children both like to watch Doctor Who with me.

No wimp comments from me. I'm still freaked out from Donnie Darko.

Donnie Darko is a freaky movie! Really boggles your mind, though. Good to watch just for how much it'll make you think it over later.

I appreciate Doctor Who for the fact that the resolutions are generally optimistic and life-affirming; the Doctor has a difficult life himself, but it seems rare that something truly awful ever happens to companions, and they are the best barometer of scare factor, I think. As a kid I may have had trouble watching it without nightmares, but I was one of those pretty sensitive kids in that. Still am, obviously. I'm not at ALL detached when I watch anything, and whatever the show kindly leaves out, my overactive brain fills in.

But I think the overall messages of the show are great ones, and it doesn't dumb down the stories to a numbing level. So I'd guess it depends on the kid.

I will repeat though, that "Blink" in series 3 (if you haven't seen it), has elements of a true horror story, and is probably over the line of what you'd want to show to younger children. My mother says, "at least 10 or up," for that episode. She also just told me that the BBC has a Fear Forecast page where kid reviewers rate each episode out of 5 for how scary it is. I don't know if that would be up prior to the ep airing or not, though.

Bah, had long comment, lost it.

Short version: I agree, the show is Good. my 2 year old was scared of the mannequins in 'Rose' and since then I've not watched any Doctor Who with children around, which means I've not watched much Doctor Who at all, as there are 6 of the little folk, 5 of whom are able to pay attention to tv. One of my kids was a little scared of the Mutant Enemy ghoul thingummy ("grr! argh!" yk) at the end of Whedon stuff. Kids.

I especially worry about my autie watching it, as his context for the world is different and he could be really really freaked out and be unable to convey it in a way I'd understand. So I like spoilers so I can get a good idea about what might be coming up. Good to know about Blink!
