Straight people are not, not, NOT...
Nov. 3rd, 2002 05:28 pmListen up, people, because I have something to say. And I'm only going to say it once.
Straight people are not the enemy. Repeat, straight people are NOT the enemy. (Okay, twice.)
It's so frustrating to see people say things like, "Straight people are such jerks!" C'mon, that's not accurate! I know plenty of wonderful straight people, and I've known a disturbing number of gay people who were total jerks...bigots...real assholes.
Straight people are jerks more often, and they make the most mistakes when it comes to "us"; gee, let's not even factor in that there are MORE straight people to be jerks and make mistakes!
And the most stupid thing of all; when homophobic gay people in the past have THEIR mistakes blamed on straight people. No. I don't think so. Let's all consider that we have a responsibility for our actions.
There have been people throughout time, gay and straight, who have been neutral to, or supportive of, GLBT people. It is NOT fair to say that some gay people were jerks to their own community BECAUSE of straights. They made a decision, the same as every person who made a decision to risk themselves for what was right. It is not fair to suggest that gays are beyond reproach, and what some have done wrong isn't their fault.
If you do something morally wrong to your people, that is NOT my fault. It is not the fault of my beautiful straight friends. It is not the fault of my straight family. We may be helping, unintentionally or not, to create societal pressures that are difficult to deal with - but we are not making your decisions for you.
If, simply by virtue of being gay, these people were as courageous and heroic as you think that makes someone...
....they would have made better decisions.
