Why is it that whenever my parents don't understand something I say, they decide it is "stupid?" I know I do that sometimes too, but I at least have the guts to listen to the explanation and admit it if I've just been a total idiot. They don't.
Tonight we were joking about our cat at the dinner table. My dad has this bad habit of leaving the bedroom door open in the morning, and she crawls all over my mom, and since my mom is allergic to her, she (my mom, not the cat) gets all pissy at dad, and so on, and so forth.
Today my dad opened the door, decided not to go to work, and went back to bed, leaving the door open. My mom was telling all about how the cat climbed on the bed and froze when she realized dad was there...she won't come in the room if she knows he's there. She's not allowed in their bedroom, but she doesn't care if my mom catches her.
"Yeah," I cracked, "'Cuz she knows dad won't be her bitch."
Everyone at the table just stared at me blankly.
Now, I know the usage was a bit strange, but boy did it piss me off when mom dismissed the whole comment with, "Ignore Dan, she's off in laa-laa land." (BTW, how much sense does it make that they can get my name right, and not even attempt pronouns? "This is my daughter, Dan,"...y'all must know how freakin' weird that sounds.)
This reminds me of the time they got mad at me when I said I couldn't believe they didn't know what GLBT stands for. I mean, they seriously did not have a clue, couldn't even guess it "has something to do with gays." So I had to tell them, which just PROVES my suspicion that they haven't read anything I've given them to read, or looked at any websites I put in faves for them in the special folder I created for THAT ONE PURPOSE...what a waste of my time. Their exact words on this topic were, [insert whiney voices here] "Well, we're not FREAKS like you...we don't need to know stupid things like that."
