Letter draft - any suggestions?
Aug. 3rd, 2003 05:29 pmMr. R------,
I was previously registered for a second year in the technical theatre program at Mount Royal. I've taken spring courses to complete my Arts and Science requirements in expectation of returning in the fall.
Unfortunately, I've run into wholly unexpected financial difficulty this summer that have upset my plans to return to Mount Royal. Because of this, I've removed myself from the theatre courses I registered for.
It's my plan in the coming year to both work and upgrade my high school mathematics to a more academic level in preparation for any university education I may pursue in the future. I expect that by the following year I will be in a secure enough financial position to return to my post-secondary education.
With these plans in mind, it is my hope that I may gain approval from the Department of Theatre and Speech at Mount Royal to return to the technical theatre program in 2004. I await your response to this request.
Sincerely,
Daniel W-------
I have NO idea how you're supposed to write letters like this, so that was my best first attempt.
I'm mainly worried about whether I should sign this with my legal name or not. I mean...I'm registered as Danielle, but I've gone as Dan since day one. And I really, really HATE using my birth name. I don't know.
Dude

Date: 2003-08-03 05:19 pm (UTC)In communities, I tend to keep all information about myself close to my chest though, and I'm very wary about who I'll tell stuff to in rl.
After all, knowing my birth name is having a lot of power over me. You can use it when I don't want you to, you can upset me with it. If someone knows it, they can use it in place of "Dan" if they don't respect me as a male. So I don't give it out freely.
But I always said that my journal is place where I'm going to be honest - and if someone is disrespectful to me in my own journal, I can always ban them. You just can't ban them in rl.
Oh, and thanks about the letter. :)

Date: 2003-08-03 05:36 pm (UTC)And then my teacher accidentally outed me. I had told these girls my name was "Dan" so of course the first question they asked was, "What's your real name?"
I ALWAYS just say, "It's really Dan," these days, no matter how much it confuses the other person. But back then, I'd give up if pressed. So I said, "Danielle...but everyone calls me Dan."
And they said, "Yeah. Um. It kinda, um, fits you better." While looking disconcerted.

It sounds very good.
I think you could sign it Dan or Daniel, and maybe just include your student id number behind it or after it. There shouldn't be any confusion about it, though, either way, I'd imagine. people are pretty flexible.
