So a Halloween package from [livejournal.com profile] siegeengine arrived yesterday. I don't generally announce these things, however he sent me a tape of a Queer Eye for the Straight Guy episode. We've been having a disagreement about how much the show sucks, and so he sent me a tape for me to see it for myself.

(We don't have television in my house.)

Okay, so this was the episode where the straight guy was "Butch" the artist and scenic painter.

The Good

Okay, number one, parts of it were funny. I fully expected that - considering that I find it amusing to laugh at people who make total idiots of themselves, I thought it would be highly hypocritcial of me to take the high road now.

I can't remember all the parts in particular I found amusing. But a few moments stand out. For example, when Carson freaked when Butch chose not wear his choice of suit pants. Ha, that's because your taste in fashion SUCKS ROCKS, CARSON! Heh.

Ted seems sort of cool - it's hard to tell, because there's not much focus on him. Well, really, how much can you say about food, anyway?

Also, I agree that Butch looked great when they were done with him (well, except for some of his clothes, perhaps, but even those were better than what he had before), and so did his apartment. And I agree he seemed more like himself than he did when he picked his own clothes. So kudos to the "Fab 5" for actually knowing how to do their jobs.

However...

The Bad

Carson's taste in fashion. Carson's TASTE in fashion! Ugh! ...Scratch that, he doesn't have any taste. I feel compelled to start an Anti-Carson!Fashion website, just to explain to people why they shouldn't listen to any of his "hip tips" or anything else. (Why would you listen to someone who dresses like a circus clown, anyway?) And I don't like affected fags. I'm sure Carson's lisp is fake. Boo.

-The jeans he picked for Butch. Hurl. I know those horrendous fake-wash jeans are in "style" right now, but let's all pray they go OUT of style real quick. Realistic-looking washes are excellent things, and keep you from looking like your mother dressed you. These nasty fake washes that just look like someone splashed yellow/white paint on them are tacky as hell. And myself, I wash my jeans not only to get them clean, but also to get the wrinkles by the pockets OUT. I don't want them essentially drawn on my jeans for me, thanks. FUGLY.

-The messenger bags. Hard to carry off if you're male. Goes best with a sort of dressed-down look. With just about anything else, you look like you wandered across a movie set and stole some poor newsboy's bag.

-GAH! That goddamn enormous belt buckle - melt it down NOW! No. Just NO. About o.oo1% of the population could wear that belt buckle without traumatizing anyone who sees them wearing it.

The Ugly

Plenty of the comments the "Fab 5" leveled at Butch were nasty and vicious, but he laughed them off. It was his choice to get hurt or offended - I don't see much point in getting very worked up by things that didn't bother him that much. (It's true that he probably was a very good sport because he knew it would end up on television; however I can't imagine he would have signed up for the "make-over" if he wasn't prepared to have to be a good sport about some things.)

Some things, however, just had me pulling out my hair in horrified embarrassment for the poor man. Going through his underwear was NOT cool. True, it's never very nice to be told things like, "Your underwear is disgusting, and you need to wash it more often," but that could have been done OFF camera, not played up.

There was a distinct underlying sense of disdain from the 5, evidenced by the sardonic clapping for Butch's weight-loss in the beginning, all the way up to some of the comments they had in the end. To me, that made Butch's effusive gratitude toward them all the worse.

In short, no, my opinion hasn't changed much. All my earlier points stand as is, and boy oh boy, now I really hate Carson's guts. Carson? plz die, kthanx.

Okay: EEEE, lurvs on the plushie.

Heh, I've said it before, I'll say it again: he dresses in clothes that look like thrift-store rejects.

I agree I don't like a lot of what Carson picks out... and he is definitely the most acerbic of the 5.

My faves are Kyan the grooming guy (just to look at ;) and Jai, the "culture" guy. They seem very cool.

Oh! and Ted does rock, though there isn't much excitement about food. He tries his best, though, and he reminds me just a tad of Ted on QAF.

Carson is definitely the worst... he can be mean, like you said, and I totally agree about the fake washes on the jeans, and the "kitten whiskers" on the crotch. Who the hell would want that??
