For some reason, one of [livejournal.com profile] abalorn's posts reminded me of something.

Several weeks ago, I was in a Chapters. (That's a book store, for anyone not familiar with it.) I guess I was on my way to see a movie, or I had just come from a movie...whatever.

I ran into a second-year actor from our program! Yeah, Christy. (Not sure how you spell that, so I'll go with the most likely option.)

She's graduated the program and she's working at Chapters over the summer. We said hi and chatted for a bit before I asked her what's she's going to be doing now.

I don't remember her giving me a definite response; I just remember that the question set her off. She ranted a bit about the program before she told me this:

"[Our theatre program] totally ruined acting for me. I never want to act again."

I sort of gaped and said something along the lines of, "are you serious?" Yes, yes - she's never acting again. She's going to do something else.

I was pretty horrified. I mean, she had plans to be a drama teacher during the school year. She didn't say anything about that, so I don't know if she's still going to do that or what. But the point seems clear that she doesn't want to attempt professional theatre anymore.

I didn't know what to say. I mean, it's her choice and everything. But what a waste...to spend two years studying something you'll never use again? (Especially if you're paying for it yourself...)

It just made me really think about what I'm doing. That's all. I don't want that to be me.

hmm... that sounds really bad.

I could see how that could happen, too, the way they seem to screw with people. It sounds totally like, not useful, for helping people get into professional theatre... like it's just there to caress the egos of the teachers... not to do anything useful for the students.

:((((

I'm glad you've got that perspective going, though... because sometimes... sometimes, you can just see through a program or something, rather than getting caught up in the program itself.

Um... does that make any sense? It's like... once you know that the wizard is fake... that sometimes you can go to see him anyway. You can still go there, and just pull back the curtain (in your head) and still get what you need from them, without buying in to all of their phony flames and drama and the big green floating face that they try to scare you with.

Um... you've seen the Wizard of Oz, right?

cuz... lately, for some reason, I just worry that people think I'm all delusional or something. ;)

*hugs*
*strength*
and
*cat food*

...

since you've already got cats.

Meh, I don't want to whine about the program anymore. It's a wasted effort.

And no - I haven't seen the Wizard of Oz. But I'm pretty sure I get the idea, regardless.

OH! We're starting to integrate our cats now. Last night we locked the big boys up in the basement and let the babies out to wander around the house. Manhattan is such a smart kitty - she went right up to the cat treehouse and scratched it. She's the only one so far who's figured out where's a good place to scratch. *beams* The vet says her playing fetch is a sign of intelligence.

(I'm telling you because I'm sure no one else cares. So you get to hear it. :P)

bzuh?

where am I? Auntie Em?

oh!

;) that's so cute about Manhattan! :)))))))
I hope the integration goes well!!
cats can be so tricky in whether or not they're going to tolerate each other... but...
dang if it doesn't sound like fun trying.

*misses having cats*

...

*scritches yours*

No, I haven't.

Have you read all the books? The Wizard of Oz series, I mean.

Yeah, I read most of them, but it was so long ago. The only ones I can remember.......

hay, wait a minute...

didn't we have this conversation before?
*confuzed*

I think it was... Ozma of Oz, or something..

but, anyway, yeah, I read most all of them... my aunt is a big Oz fan and has been trying to collect first editions of them forever, and has tonnes of the books, so... growing up, did have access to them.

I guess if you've read the books, you could give the show a slip. It wasn't either all that or a bag of chips.

Hehe. Yeah, that's what I thought. I mean, the two reasons I can see to rent it are

1) Judy Garland
2) Judy Garland singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"

And since I can HEAR number 2 on a Broadway album...*shrug*

I think it's pretty sad when a movie has more cultural impact than the book it came from.

Yeah, I just wanted to make sure that you'd read them. Cuz it's so annoying when people bug me about not seeing stuff that I've read the book versions of, and when I mention the book version they go, "It was a book?" ...Also was in a cranky mood. I just got my braces adjusted and all and now my teeth hurt like crazy and I can't eat anything but soup. *cries*

Oh yes, and Ozma stank like yesterday's garbage. *grin* That was the conversation...relating Ozma to trans issues.

*nods*

I still need to go back and re-read that one... because it's too fuzzy for me to remember.

I should just pick up the rest of them for Gina... but..

I wonder if I should give that one a miss? or... I just wonder if it would be a wrong thing to have her read and learn from...
