There's a poll thread on Gaia right now called "ppl." (Obviously, this person didn't get a whole lot out of school. Certainly not respect for the English language.):

What do you think of having to go to school?

I love it
27% [ 6 ]
HATE it!
18% [ 4 ]
It is ok..I really enjoy seeing my friends there
54% [ 12 ]

I was thinking about my answer and realized it had to be "It's okay...I go to see my friends."

One of the things I realized the year I dropped out was much I depended on school to keep me in contact with my friends. With few exceptions, we never got in the habit of phoning each other or getting together outside of school to hang out. Maybe some people did, but my gang? Nah, why should we? We were just going to see each other at school! I suppose we have good reason to regret this now, because we have such difficulty getting together now - it's taking us a while to learn how - but it didn't seem important at the time.

We got all of our gossip in by passing notes.

All of our meatier talks and debates happened in the library when we were supposed to be doing research, or at lunch when we yelled at the top of our lungs over the rap battles.

And when we wanted to hang out outside of school? Well, we just left school. Some of the best memories of those years were gathered when I was supposed to be taking notes on the second World War, or solving chemistry problems. For me, it was never that I hated doing those things, or that I wasn't any good at it. I was a lot better at school than a lot of people. Maybe that's why I felt like my time was better spent occasionally blowing it off to go spend a day with my friends, walking around downtown in the sun and popping into every little store that caught our eye.

One afternoon, a bunch of us went off to hang out at the mall, and by the time we got on the bus to go home, it was late enough to be dark. There's something about being young and out with your friends in the dark. We sure felt that urge to get into mischief. It's not really that you want to be trouble, it's just...that you want to do something a little crazy and daring. That seems so cliche to say. I just don't have the words to articulate the feeling that's dark in the pit of your stomach.

But we didn't get into trouble, not that night. We all ended up sleeping a little on the bus, curled up together, watching the street lamps slide past us into the dark. I felt totally content, and when I looked around at all my friends with me there on the nearly-empty bus, I thought, I'll remember this. I'll remember this as one of the best times of my life.

I think I will, too.
