i'm torn between describing the situation one of two ways...

the first one that hit me the hardest was that there was an overt lack of communication between the father and son, and then, the father died. now it is too late to express the emotion the son is feeling, because his father isn't there to hear it anymore

the other one would be he's just not proud of his father, he doesn't love his father and can't tell a lie....
